On Sunday Kollywood Superstar Rajinikanth met a delegation of 16 farmers led by P. Ayyakannu at his Poes Garden residence in Chennai and was reminded about his promise of donating ₹1 crore for the interlinking of Himalayan and Peninsular rivers by a farmers’ association.
In 2002, the actor made a promise over Cauvery water-sharing dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Upon being reminded, Rajinikanth offered the money but the association requested him to donate it directly to the Centre.
During the media interaction, Ayyakannu said, “Sixteen farmers met Rajini for his support to interlinking of rivers.” Recalling that Rajini had promised to donate Rs 1 Cr for river interlinking project, he said, “We asked him to hand over his contribution to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rajinikanth has agreed to it. Rajini told us that he would take steps to facilitate interlinking rivers and proposed the idea that peninsular rivers like Mahanadi, Godavari, Palar, Krishna and Cauvery should be linked first.”
Ayyakannu further said, “Rajinikanth assured support to farmers on all issues faced by them. We are confident that the superstar will help us. He even spoke to us about the protests that we held in the capital. He asked how we managed in an alien city. He knew about all the forms of agitation we had undertaken,” He expressed hope the help would soon come to them. The meeting of Rajini with farmers hints about Rajini’s entry in politics.
